Mike Gardner; IPTPA (International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association) certified Pickleball instructor.
After leaving the corporate world following a 35 year career in the aerospace industry, I found Pickleball. I was introduced to the sport 15+ years ago through a family member and was immediately hooked.
My journey has taken me from being overweight with a mild heart condition to losing over 40 pounds and significantly improving my overall health. I reached the 4.5 level and competed in many tournaments before a shoulder replacement and rotator cuff repair sidelined me. Although the surgery interrupted my ability to play, I used drilling and non-competitive play as part of my rehabilitation. In some ways I’ve learned the game twice; forced to focus on a softer control game as I recovered.
I’m most interested in teaching older adult beginners and novice players so they too can learn and enjoy the game, improve their health and develop new friendships as I have. Especially players who have moved on from sports they enjoyed when younger and are now looking for a new physical activity.
My coaching philosophy is to listen to players, observe their current skills and then instruct them within their capabilities being aware that most players have limitations. I keep things simple by not over instructing. I emphasize effective drills and training to improve skills rather than overwhelming players with too much information at once. Each session will build on the foundation as the player develops with review, effective practice and drills, and introducing new skills and drills as appropriate.
Pickleball has truly changed my life from the health aspect to the many friendships I continue to develop. I love that it is a sport my wife and I can share as we play with the many friends we have gained through the years.
I look forward to teaching Pickleball and helping others improve.
Perry Atkinson grew up playing ping pong, tournament Racquetball, and college tennis (along with High School football, track, and basketball). He still enjoys lap swimming, mountain biking with his yellow lab, bird hunting, and hanging out with his best friend and wife Sabine.
Perry’s pickleball experience started in 2014 when he decided to sign up for a time at the Athletic Club of Bend and give it a try. He fell in love with the game immediately! The people were so friendly and he never laughed so much in his life!! It was a perfect fit. He became an instant court rat!
Within a year, he had medaled in 4.0 and 4.5 tournaments. He started commuting to Corvallis to play with some of the best players in the world at that time. At the end of 2015 he had become Central Oregon's first 5.0
rated player. By 2016, Perry was now drilling and playing 25-30 hours a week. He considers 2016 the pinnacle of his professional career where he earned a silver medal in mixed doubles at The National tournament He also placed 4th that year at Nationals in men’s doubles.
After this, Perry had met most all his goals in the game. His knee was breaking down, so he hit the breaks on playing at the pro level. He took a 3 year break from serious play, and just played on occasion.
Perry started playing pickleball again in 2020 and has been playing more each year since. Unless a friend or family member gets him to play with them, he is no longer playing serious tournaments. However, he loves
playing Apple league in Arizona in the winter. His team won the 5.0 Arizona state championship in 2024, and they are going to Las Vegas in October for the National Apple tournament.
Perry is now at the point where he enjoys giving back to the game, the same way people helped him learn it 10 years ago. He is happy to drill with people to improve their skills. He also teaches clinics on occasion.
